Renovation plans include transformation of the St. Aldhelm’s Academy, with a large new building and two refurbished blocks. The entire facility will be enveloped in a new landscape. The building will offer flexible multi-use learning spaces, which will create an inspirational learning facility. The design of the new facility will echo 21st century modern teaching methodology.

The new school building will feature student and visitor entrances; a theatre; learning spaces for Dance, Drama, Art and Science; and four schools, where the young people will learn in small family communities.

The existing two buildings will be transformed into a hub for work-based learning, such as hair and beauty, construction, car maintenance and forestry skills. The new landscaping will consist of entrance plazas, an outdoor theatre, a central courtyard, a woodland strip and learning gardens.

The landscape will add greenery as well as unite the buildings. The project involves development of community facilities such as a cafe, enterprise shop, hair and beauty services, and outdoor areas. The proposal also includes improvement to the cycle and car parking, safety, security and accessibility of the old facility.

Construction on the Academy is likely to complete in 2013, and will be undertaken by Kier Construction.
