The Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD) has unveiled the renovated facilities and the 47,500 square feet of new space added to the school. Shawnee Mission East High School, built in 1958, was in dire need of improvements.
The $24.3 million renovation project includes a refurbished library and auditorium. The renovated school also features a wrestling room and a new and bigger weight room for athletics. A second gymnasium with a new foyer leading into the building has also been created.
The school features new band choir rooms, and new office and entrance to the building. The new entrance is designed to allow students easier access and better visibility to the parking lot. The old office has been transformed into a student resource center.
The school has also received some technological upgrades such as; the old classroom’s overhead projectors have been replaced by new high-tech, ceiling-mounted projectors. Teachers have wireless tablets with information that can be projected on an 8-foot screen.
