The redevelopment project was announced in order to increase the capacity of the airport from seven million to 20 million passengers per year. The total budget of this project has been stated to be about $698 million.

Fawaz al Farah, chief of the Kuwait Department of Civil Aviation, stated that the redevelopment work would begin within the next two years and that the decision regarding the expansion of the airport had been taken due to an increase in the air traffic throughout 2009 in Kuwait.

There was a 26% increase in the number of passengers passing through the terminals and revenues earned by the airport shot up to an estimated $62.8 million.
