The Martian Embassy boasts a unique architecture which hints of a fusion between a whale, a rocket and a time tunnel. The key component of the design is oscillating plywood ribs, which runs the length of the space and is punctuated by red planet light and sound projections.
The space has been designed to foster creativity in children. The space has been divided into three segments – the embassy, shop and the school. The experience begins at the street entrance that accommodates the embassy, which leads to the shop full of red planet traveller essentials, and ends at the classroom.
The design utilised 1068 pieces of CNC-cut plywood. The designer has used the the technologies from the yacht and space industry to create shelves, seats, benches, storage, counters and displays and flooring using timber strips. The timber was then painted with Martian green. The complete ensemble of walls, ceiling and floor, space, structure and ornament, creates a striking space.
The concept for the new The Sydney Story Factory was coined by the designer in association with production company Will O’Rourke and its creative partners The Glue Society.
