Detailed designs for the initial phase for the regeneration of Hull’s historic West Park have been submitted for planning permission by Hull Gateway – the neighborhood regeneration agency charged with revitalizing Hull’s housing market and transforming city neighborhoods over the next 10-15 years. The scheme is a part of a wider GBP400 million ($671.6 million) regeneration of Newington and St. Andrews in west Hull.
LDA Design was appointed as lead designer by Hull Gateway to begin the revitalization process of the park. Collaborating with sub-consultant artist Jason Bruges Studio, key elements have been designed for the first phase, the GBP1.4 million ($2.3 million approx) project to redesign the main Anlaby Road entrance.
New artworks will be installed in the entrance square, to give the nearby listed Carnegie library building an enhanced setting. Two axial paths will connect the park gateway with Hull City’s Kingston Communications football stadium, which is located within West Park.
New sculptural piers, with digital impressions of the original entrance features, acknowledge the late 19th century entrance design. The piers will be at the threshold of a new patterned floor-scape which incorporates a paving design inspired by the mosaic art nouveau frieze in the ‘Arts & Crafts’ Carnegie library entrance rotunda. Other features that define the entrance space include a sculptural CorTen leaf patterned ‘hedge’ and English romantic woven ‘fence’.
Pending approval, the first stage of work is expected to begin by early 2010, with a scheduled completion by mid-2010.
