In order to make the patients better understand their diagnosis, the centre will include a user-friendly cancer resource centre (supported by a cancer resource coordinator) that provides the latest information from the American Cancer Society and other well-respected sources.
The centre also includes a cancer-help kiosk, which links directly to the National Cancer Institute’s database. It allows the patients and their families easy access to comprehensive cancer information, including treatment options, potential side effects, medications and supportive care.
With an aim to create a comfortable as well as a natural environment, the centre features soothing colour palette and nature-inspired artwork. The fabrics and furnishings are selected to be more hospitable and less hospital-like. Wood flooring has been installed in private rooms to minimise noise. Providing more privacy, furniture and computer screens are carefully placed in the rooms.
The cancer centre is part of Loma Linda University Health’s comprehensive health system, which is widely respected as a healthcare leader pioneering work in such areas as organ transplants, proton treatment for cancers, cardiac care, physical rehabilitation, and acute pediatric and adult care as well as treatments for chemical dependence and other behavioural disorders.
The New Women’s Cancer and Surgical Oncology Center opened its doors to the patients on 20 March 2013.
