The 140,000 square feet building located at the centre of the college campus accommodates a learning resource centre, laboratories for the Digital Media Program and classrooms with a capacity of over 120. It also comprises a bookstore, dining rooms, a large full-scale commercial kitchen and conference rooms in addition to faculty and administrative offices. The facility consists of outdoor terraces that provide views of the San Francisco Bay.
The centre is part of a $285 million construction programme of San Mateo County Community College District at CSM financed by San Mateo County voter-approved Measure A. The design-build project covered over 60 acres of site upgrades including infrastructure, landscaping, hardscaping improvements, ADA accessibility as well as construction of two facilities costing $220 million.
The first building to be constructed was the 88,000 square feet Allied Health and Wellness Building and Aquatics Centre designed by Kwan Henmi which was completed in April 2010. The remaining $65 million has been used to refurbish eight buildings on the CSM campus.
Both buildings have been designed and constructed to conform to sustainability standards. The Allied Health building has already secured LEED Gold certification while the college center building has exceeded LEED Silver standards and is being reviewed for a LEED Gold certification.
