The 38.16m (124ft) Moonen 124 Northlander, designed by René van der Velden Yacht Design, has the distinction of being the longest and highest displacement yacht that Moonen has ever built. It is the first Moonen yacht with a four-deck central atrium and spiral staircase. Its layout features a main-deck master suite forward with veranda.
The Moonen 124 features an innovative interior by Art-Line, featuring fusion styling of western cherry joinery, accented by Oriental details. The wheelhouse is designed as a fine example of ergonomic planning. Fusion styling of western cherry joinery and other details, including woven bamboo, leather, wooden floors, tropical shutters, and a variety of loose lounging furniture adorn the interiors of the yacht.
Naval architect Stolk Marimecs has created smooth lines below the waterline, which ensure both comfort at sea and low fuel consumption levels. The yacht is designed to be suitable for charter as well as private use.
Emile Bilterijst, MD of Moonen Shipyards stated that as one of the largest vessels the company has launched to date, the Moonen 124 incorporates all the decades of know-how at the yard.
The yard is currently building an even larger yacht for a repeat owner: The first Moonen 133. The yacht will be complete with its own submarine, and is scheduled for delivery in 2012.
The award was presented on 28 October 2010, the first night of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) in Florida, at the 20th Anniversary ISS Awards Gala. The International Superyacht Society is the sole organization serving and representing the large yacht industry worldwide.
