Pursuant to the contract, Morgan Sindall will undertake development of new facilities and renovation of the existing facilities of the St Mary’s College in Hull. Scope of work involves construction of a 70,000 square feet teaching block, a specialist sports block and a theatre.
The teaching block has been designed by Capita Symonds and will accommodate 12 humanities classrooms, six sixth form classrooms, 14 Science laboratories, 7,500 square feet of art and design space, a food technology classroom, two ICT suites and a learning resource centre. The new sports block will be a 11,800 square feet facility, which will consist of three-court sports block with three sports science classrooms, an all-weather pitch and multi-use games area.
The theatre part of the scheme includes development of a new professional-standard 300-seat theatre with a fly tower. The fly tower will allow stage scenery to be raised and lowered during performances. Upon completion, the theatre will be among the first to be installed in an education environment in the UK.
The design of the new building incorporates large amount of glazing and south facing frontage, which is likely to increase solar gains of the building. In order to control this, the design incorporates use of thermal modelling and solar controlled glazing for maintaining a steady internal temperature.
The project is part of the £400 million ($627.48 million) Hull Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, which will deliver 17 new, world-class, schools by the end of 2014.
