The 20-bed ward has incorporated special design techniques featuring a special paint scheme and lighting and colour co-ordinated tables and chairs. The paint scheme has been used at the ward to make sure that patients don’t open wrong doors. Slighting has also been featured to create different atmospheres with signs featuring white writings with red backgrounds to make them clearer for patients to read.

Every design detail inside the ward has been included with lot of consideration. Colours of chairs and table cloths were specifically chosen to encourage appetite and make it easier for patients to know when and where to eat. Each patient can also personalise their bed area for easy recognition. Each bay features beds on only one side to reduce confusion.

The 18-month pilot project was launched in partnership with the Strategic Health Authority. The city council is further planning to create a £30 million ($48.7 million) dementia care centre next to Waitrose.
