Designed and built by Mahwah NJ’s Cipriano Landscape Design, the award was given for its perimeter overflow feature and unique automatic pool cover system. This pool is one of the first pools to feature both these facilities.
Inspiration behind the design of the pool was Gansevoort Hotel swimming pool in Turks and Caicos. The swimming pool is spread over 420 square-feet and features a 64-square-foot spa across the yard. It also has a bold, turquoise, 2-inch by 2-inch glass tile finish, which fills the gap between the two aquatic features. There is an outdoor living space with a modern, linear outdoor fireplace.
There are several amenities available at the swimming pool. The pool features fiber optic lighting along the top of the glass tile wall and the top of the fireplace. Coloured LED lighting enhances the perimeter overflow pool and spa with colours. In the glass tile wall, a small window is featured which has a sheer water element, dubbed appropriately as a water window. This is located directly into the small outdoor kitchen set on a custom concrete patio made to look like wood planks. The stainless steel kitchen has leather finished granite counter-tops while the pool patio is a random length limestone that gives a modern, linear design of the yard.
As safety measure around the pool, a glass fence is installed. The fence also provides a clean look and preserves open space in the rather limited area between the pool and the house. This glass is made safe by adding another barrier between the kids and the swimming pool.
For additional safety, the pool and spa were fitted with auto-covers that preserve heat, reduce maintenance, and promote safety. The perimeter overflow pool made engineering for the auto-cover quite challenging. Custom brackets and hardware were designed in order to open and close the pool like a traditional cover. A key highlight of the pool is an automation of pumps and heaters using a wireless system compatible with the iPhone.
The Upper Saddle River pool and landscape design also posed problems to the designers. The pool is located within ½ inch from both setbacks. The location of the pool, spa, and outdoor living area maximised the potential of the space and also created more space around the yard for the kids to play in the grass.
