The new designs have replaced the older ones with reduced cost of construction, operation and maintenance, resulting in easy access and exit compared to the previous designs which was similar to those at Muscat and Salalah airports. The complete construction area has been reduced in the new design without affecting the passenger handling capacity of these airports which stood at 1.5 million passengers per year.
The new designs for the domestic terminals have considered future expansion to accommodate growing passenger capacity and cargo activity. The design aims for horizontal expansion, which will be dependent on the development of aviation activity at these airports and tourism activities in nearby areas.
The terminals will feature two tubes of different specifications that will be connected between the passengers’ terminal and the aircraft. There will be four check-in counters and an e-gate, which will offer smooth processing of the passenger travel through an advanced security system. It will also include a complex for air navigation that includes a control tower (38m-high) and buildings for the navigation and meteorological services, airport equipment maintenance, firefighting and guards. A substation of the third packages, the chiller unit building, and two aviation fuel plants at Adam and Ras al Had airports alongside two buildings for VIPs in Adam and Sohar will be constructed.
As per Transport and Communications Ministry, two buildings will be constructed for air freight at Al Duqm and Sohar airports, with a capacity of 25,000 tonnes per annum to meet the business and economic activity of the area. The ministry also added that the first package works for all four airports have been completed, except for Adam which is almost completed. The second package constituting runways and taxiways are completed at Adam airport and almost completed in Sohar airport. The work is 45% completed in Al Duqm airport and 57% completed at Ras Al Had airport.
