The $6 million refurbishment of Martic Elementary School is underway, and the $11 million renovation and expansion of Central Manor Elementary School has been agreed by Penn Manor officials. Officials will also move forward with the $1 million proposals to improve Penn Manor High School’s infrastructure and to revamp its west gym.
The refurbishment of Martic Elementary, originally built in 1952, includes the installation of geothermal heating and cooling system with a well field underneath the playground. The school will gain air conditioning, an improved electrical system, better insulated windows, a spacious library and computer lab, and a secure entry system.
The refurbishment of Central Manor Elementary, built in 1939, is expected to receive federal stimulus dollars. Seven instructional spaces will be added, while construction of more rooms for art and music instruction is also in the plan. The school will also receive new security and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Environmentally friendly design elements may include solar panels to heat water and windmills to generate electricity.
At the High School, the $400,000 gym renovation includes a new floor and roof and revamped locker rooms. In January, the school board awarded bids totaling $580,000 for electrical, cabling, plumbing and heating, ventilation and air conditioning contractors.
