The renovated ART clinic was unveiled on August 6, 2010. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Columbia University’s International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP) have worked together to extensively renovate the clinic.
The ART Clinic at Ambo Hospital that provides services to over 4700 HIV-infected individuals, including 2580 patients receiving ART, was in dire need of repair and refurbishment. The renovation constituted reconstructing the walls and roof, merging and splitting of rooms for better use, rebuilding laboratories, a pharmacy, sanitation facilities and waiting areas, overall cleaning, and outside landscaping. CDC and ICAP also provided furnishings and medical equipment. The enhanced clinic is currently well-equipped to handle quality and comprehensive HIV care and treatment services.
Launched in 2003 by President George W. Bush, PEPFAR holds a place in history as the largest effort by any nation to combat a single disease. The US Government has been supporting Ambo Hospital since 2005 in an attempt to increase comprehensive HIV care capacity and ART services.
