This will be the first redevelopment of the terminal since its construction in 1993. The newly redeveloped terminal will offer a major transformation of the terminal, 15 new dining and retail brands, and new passenger amenities throughout.
The redevelopment will feature various new dining and retail post-security checks area, including many Chicago-based restaurants and brands, and a re-engineered layout that enhances the traveler experience and maximises revenues.

Additional features of the new terminal include European-style pass-through duty-free store where departing passengers will flow through after clearing the new TSA checkpoint. Operated by Dufry, the duty-free shopping program will link Chicago’s famous Magnificent Mile shopping district to Terminal 5. Travelers will also have access to stand alone luxury shops from renowned designers Bvlgari, Michael Kors, Salvatore Ferragamo and Emporio Armani.
This program is inclusive of Tortas Frontera by local award-winning chef Rick Bayless, which will feature relaxing sit-down atmosphere and flavorful Mexican cuisine with ingredients sourced from local farms.
The work for the redevelopment of the terminal started in July 2012 and is expected to end by fall 2013. The project received an amount of $26 million from Westfield Concession Management and its tenant partners which is expected to generate 180 construction jobs. The new dining and retail program will create 100 new full-time concession jobs, adding to the existing 180 concession jobs for a total of approximately 280 employees.
