Spread over 40 acres, the London Olympic Stadium is located on a diamond-shaped island between two existing waterways, located within the southern section of the new Olympic Park. Populous has designed the 80, 000-seat London Olympic Stadium in such a manner that it can also shrink to 25,000 for multi-use events.
The state-of-the-art stadium has 400m athletics track, changing rooms, and medical support facilities. The spectator space has two tiers – the lower one is permanent and can accommodate 25,000 people, whereas the upper extended section is made up of lightweight steel and concrete and can house further 55,000 fans.
The extended part of the stadium is detachable with 700 rooms. The 7000 cubic meters of concrete stuff laid on the stadium ground, forms a solid platform. Despite its huge size, just 10,000 tonnes of steel is utilised to build the stadium, which is far less if compared with the same size of stadiums built elsewhere in the world.
The key sustainability criteria of reduce, reuse and recycle were also adopted to create a compact, flexible and lightweight design. The black and white seats provide a neutral backdrop for the interior colour of the spectator facilities and pathways.
