Spanning 25,800 square feet, Power House was restored and re-opened in March 2010 as part of the Yankee Stadium Redevelopment Project. The Power House is located in Mill Pond Park, a 10-acre waterfront park created along the Harlem River, which is the first significant waterfront park to open along the Bronx bank of the Harlem River.
The Power House features public restrooms and office space on the first floor for the Parks Department. The building’s second floor houses 12,500 square feet of space for public programming.
The Power House achieved LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use as well as a host of other sustainable strategies. It features a green roof with over 52% of the total roof area vegetated. About 23% of the total site area has been restored with native species.
Power House has incorporated a stormwater management system that results in a 25% rate decrease and 50% quantity decrease in runoff from calculated pre-project conditions. Reduced water use in the facility by 43% was achieved using a calculated baseline design through the installation of low-flow water closets, low-flow urinals, ultra low-flow lavatories, and a low flow sink.
Over 80% of the existing wall, floor, and roof elements have been retained, avoiding the use of new construction materials. Over 23% of the total building materials content by value has been manufactured using recycled materials. All the wood based building materials employed in the building are harvested from FSC-certified forests.
As part of the Yankee Stadium Redevelopment Program, New York City invested $64 million to transform an old industrial waterfront into a new ten-acre Mill Pond Park. The preservation and renovation of the Power House was implemented by NYC Economic Development Corporation. Stantec provided the design services while construction management was provided by LiRO.
Besides Power House, Mill Pond Park also features picnic and grass areas, overlooks with waterfront views, 16 Deco Turf tennis courts, and an esplanade to unite the site.
