Recognized for its red brick exterior and looming tower, the downtown landmark is undergoing a major renovation and enlargement, said to be the second large-scale project undertaken within the Peter Street building in a decade. Post completion, the enhancements will translate into a lot of programming, a wider kind of exhibits and new opportunities to broaden audience base.

The building’s ground floor was dramatically reworked throughout a renovation that was completed in late 2004. One among the foremost visible indications of the progress created up to now could be a second-storey addition at the rear of the building. Outfitted with falcate windows that echo the first style, the addition will enable the depository to supply distended gallery area during a climate-controlled space.

Renovating the present second-floor space provides an area for displays and events. The building’s third floor can serve as a school room for academic programming. The planned use of the second and third floors needed sprinklers throughout the building.

The museum is expected to open by spring 2013. Funding for the project has come from a mix of federal, municipal and fund raising dollars.
