Sprawling over 45-acres of land, the SDCWDF is a 24-building, 1,216-bed facility that has been designed to function as a self-contained community.

The complete community offers six distinct housing types and various specialised building components such as psychiatric housing, infirmary, law enforcement training facilities, vocational workshops, and a central plant.

Delivering a normative treatment environment, the campus design encourages positive behaviour. It acknowledges that a less institutional environment can provide significant psychological benefits for inmates and staff alike while also contributing to successful strategies that reduce recidivism. Focusing on the transformative philosophy, the facility has been designed to explore principles of choice, change and accountability.

The facility has been created to support rehabilitative opportunities and the safety and security of staff and inmates. Taking care of the psychological and physiological needs of women inmates, the facility features multi-custody living environments, which are clustered around exterior courtyards that integrally connect the interior to the exterior spaces for intimate or group interaction. The program buildings are located in the heart of the campus core.

Targeting for LEED Gold certification, the facility also features carefully designed landscapes throughout.

The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Western Pacific is a membership organisation, which is established to advocate and advance single source project delivery within the design and construction community.
