The awards program is backed by the Design Institute of Australia, the professional body representing Australian designers. The program has shortlisted 179 projects. There were seven primary categories, four optional categories and four automatic categories. The 2010 award program witnessed more designers entering their projects across multiple categories.

Primary category includes Retail Design, Hospitality Design, Corporate Design, Public Design, Installation Design, Residential Design and Residential Decoration. Optional Category includes Color in Commercial Design, Color in Residential Design, Environmentally Sustainable Design and Emerging Interior Design Practice. Automatic Category includes Best of State Awards for Commercial Design, Best of State Awards for Residential Design and Premier Award, Interior Design Excellence and Innovation.

The residential design category was most popular with designers this year receiving the highest number of entries, followed closely by corporate design. The largest comparative increase in 2010 entries was in Environmental Sustainable Design (ESD), which increased by 107%.

The winners and finalists of the 2010 Australian Interior Design Awards will be declared on April 23, 2010 at Sydney Town Hall.

The Australian Interior Design Awards is a partnership event of the Design Institute of Australia, designEX and Artichoke magazine.
