British cutlery company, Studio William launched a National Flatware Design competition, ‘Sweet Instruments of Desire’ in a bid to encourage student designers to create innovative yet practical cutlery forms for the dessert course. Anabela Chan, one of 54 students from four universities who entered the competition, has won. Her design, titled ‘Leaf’ is designed to enhance the experience of eating dessert. In addition to receiving £2,000, her design will be manufactured by Studio William and sold exclusively in John Lewis stores across the UK.

All the 54 competition entries will be on display in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Sackler Centre throughout the London Design Festival starting from14-23 September 2012, alongside the seven Studio William cutlery patterns from the V&A’s permanent collection. The patterns, which won the award, include Mulberry, opulent Royal Oak Gold Plate and multi-award winning Mahogany Satin. This is the first time that the London Design Fest will showcase such a design entry.

The Studio William Flatware UK Student Design Competition 2012 involved four universities: Edinburgh College of Art & Design, Sheffield Hallam University, Birmingham Institute of Art & Design, The Royal College of Art, London. All entries will be eligible for inclusion in a national touring exhibition later this year.
