Terra Plana, which translates to flat earth, is placing great emphasis on creative designs that will facilitate a more sustainable approach to retail.

It said it is seeking “creative ideas and approaches, centered on sustainable, mobile, short-term shop design,” according to a statement. It is seeking designers who are able to produce imaginative retail solutions to a limited budget.

The string of pop-up shops will begin in London and then spread across the globe.

Terra Plana’s third permanent location opened last fall at Westfield shopping center in London and pertains to the sustainable shop idea with the use of LED lighting and cardboard shelving.

The shoe firm has three concepts, 21st century artisan, recycling and barefoot. They believe in using modern techniques, recycled material and that humans benefit from being barefoot.

The materials they use to promote sustainability include chrome-free leathers, vegetable tanned leathers, recycled materials, pure latex soling materials, recycled rubber soles and recycled foam foot beds. They also use E-leather, which is a leather by-product.

A large amount of Terra Plana’s production is produced in China with a design studio and apartments in Guangzhou.

A pop-up store is planned to open this week on February 21 on Brushfield Street, London.
