Deer Valley resort, located in Park City, Utah, is the first ski resort to induct a funicular lift. The funicular is located at the bottom of the mountain at the St Regis Deer Crest resort’s snow park building and lies opposite Deer Valley’s snow park lodge. Once complete and operational, the funicular will ascend 500 vertical feet in just 90 seconds to the primary hotel building, the first five-star branded luxury resort in Utah opening this September.
The Swiss-made funicular cabin cars were driven in from Switzerland and a 500 ton crane is used to install them on the tracks. Gangloff, a Swiss coach building company, currently based in Berne – maker of Bugatti, Alfa Romeo and Rolls Royce – made the cars for transportation. The cars feature tinted, UVA and UVB protected panoramic windows and provides seating for nearly 15 passengers with a portion for luggage. The travel is free of charge and provides the passengers a complete view of Deer Valley. The cars also function independently so that demand can be met, both, at the bottom as well as the top level.
The funiculars will run on steel railway tracks which were made by Doppelmayr Cable Transportation Engineering Company (CTEC), a North American company based in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Deer Valley ski resort covers over 2,000 acres, stretching six mountains, and the snowfall measures over 350 inches. The resort offers activities such as skiing, mountain biking, snowmobiling and other summer and winter activities. The St Regis will join another Deer Valley lodging property, the Stein Eriksen Lodge located mid-mountain at Silver Lake, as the only properties in Utah to achieve five-star status.
