The new bus station project is the phase I of a £350 million ($547.4 million) regional shopping and leisure centre, known as City Sentral, which will create a top regional shopping destination in the city.
The bus station is located on the site of the former John Street car park and will consist of 22 bus bays, improved passenger waiting areas, a refreshment kiosk, and toilets. It has been designed in a way to provide a semicircular enclosed passenger concourse around two sides of the site with buses arriving and departing from John Street.
The bus station will have curved concourse, which will feature full-height glazed screens to separate passengers from the moving vehicles. The curved roof of the building will be supported on V-shaped steel columns. Vinci has completed construction of the steel frame consisting of 240 tonnes of complex curved steelwork.
The work on the bus-station is due to be completed in December 2012. Vinci has partnered with UK-based SBS Architects to deliver the final phase on site.
The City Sentral development is being planned by developer Realis Estates. The scheme is being designed by architects Benoy and will include a wide range of new stores, cafes, restaurants, vibrant public spaces, a multi-screen cinema, a hotel, modern bus facility and improved parking.
