Splashpoint Leisure Centre will replace the existing Aquarena. The centre has been designed in a way that it emphasises the connection between the land and the sea. This is rendered by means of ribbons of accommodation flowing from north to south.
The new leisure centre will comprise of a six-lane, 25 metre pool; and a combined learner/diving pool. Both the learner and diving pools will have movable floors. The centre will also include indoor leisure pools with rapids, flumes and outdoor waters, a health and fitness centre, café, crèche and flexible space for other activities. All the pools have their own terraces, which open up the façade to animate the beachfront elevation.
Construction of the leisure centre is being undertaken by Morgan Sindall. The company has recently commenced placement of the 50-tonne steel beams into place on the roof of the centre’s main pool hall.
Splashpoint Leisure Centre was also the subject of a RIBA design competition in September 2009.
