The facility, which opened in 2011 end, is the first new-construction food bank in the country to secure the certification. It covers an area of 147,000 square feet which is twice the size of its previous location.
The property employs various green measures. It has been fitted with a host of energy-saving elements such as a white roof, air-cooled heat pumps, as well as highly-efficient glass. Energy is further reduced with installation of motion-controlled lighting fixtures. There is also a heat-recovery operation which utilises the energy produced by a large cooler system to heat the warehouse.
Use of reclaimed products add to the sustainability of the facility. Incorporation of bike racks and preferred parking spaces for carpooling and energy-efficient vehicles boost the green venture.
