A 1940 Pitt Special biplane will be suspended from the ceiling of the terminal building whereas a display case will exhibit model airplanes and airport-related awards and historical documents. The entrance of the new terminal is made of glass.

The terminal will also be adorned with a living wall designed by West Bloomfield ‘s Planterra. The wall will feature ferns, mosses, orchids, bromeliads, ficus vines and spider plants which will help in improving the air quality.

The terminal will incorporate several green features such as installation of solar panels on the roof and three Windspire wind turbines to produce electricity. The facility will also upgrade its heating and cooling facilities by installing a geothermal bed, seven feet underground.

Other sustainable features include equipping energy-saving LED fixtures and fluorescents and reusing rainwater collected from the roof into rain gardens. Use of energy-efficient measures is expected to bring a fall of a minimum of 15% in energy expenses.

The revamped terminal will house an expanded US Customs office and a mini-station of the Waterford Police Department. It will also feature a conference room comprising a catering kitchen to facilitate meetings and other social events.

The project has received contributions of $2 million in federal grants and bonds.
