WHY
Year Established: 2015
Inspiration to Start:
Gillespie’s journey into the design world began during her maternity leave when she crafted lights for her daughter’s bedroom. This initial project ignited a passion for design that transformed into a successful side-hustle, eventually evolving into Spark & Bell.
Gillespie’s first creation, a light made from painted wooden balls, sparked joy and led her to design a collection of saleable items using locally sourced materials. As her work gained traction, architects and interior designers began to take notice, leading to features in various hospitality and commercial projects.
First Major Commission:
The “Seraphín” chandelier, designed specifically for the commercial market, exemplifies Spark & Bell’s innovative approach. This project marked a significant milestone for the studio, showcasing its commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship.
Upcoming Events:
Gillespie will showcase Spark & Bell’s work at Decorex alongside Estilla, highlighting the skills of UK-based makers and designers.
Future Plans:
Gillespie envisions opening a creative space near Brighton that fosters collaboration among makers. The studio is also expanding its product line to include a glass shade collection, ceramics, and new materials made from recycled marine plastics.

WHAT
1. Seraphín Chandelier
The “Seraphín” chandelier is Spark & Bell’s latest offering, designed with the commercial market in mind. Crafted from the studio’s proprietary “Jewel” recycled plastic, made from old CD cases, this multi-tiered chandelier weighs over 8kg in its largest size. The design reflects a commitment to sustainability while providing a striking visual impact.

2. Collaborative Pieces
Gillespie is passionate about working with local artisans to create unique lighting pieces. Collaborations with Make Relief, Throw to Fire, and Matt Boysons Woodworking have resulted in innovative designs that incorporate materials such as jesmonite and cork. Each piece is a testament to the craftsmanship and local heritage that Spark & Bell champions.
3. Bespoke Creations
Spark & Bell’s workshop is equipped to handle bespoke projects, allowing for custom creations tailored to specific client needs. Currently, the studio is working on an installation in Mayfair featuring large petal-like pieces made from “Jewel” recycled plastic, showcasing the versatility and creativity of the team.
