Scope of the project involves development of a new campus library and facilities for teaching and research in architecture, design and construction. The new facilities will be built at Stockwell Street, just off Greenwich Park in London, which was formerly an office block and an out-of-use petrol station. The site is within the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Pursuant to the contract, the contractor will build a four-storey, 15,500 square metre building, which will house a library, lecture theatres, seminar spaces and digital studios as well as TV production studios, editing suites, a model-making workshop and animation studios. The plan also includes a gallery, cafe and retail space, which will be open to the community, and will be located at ground floor level.
The building has been designed to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating. The development will have tiered flat roofs, which will be converted into roof-top gardens. The concrete frame building structure beneath will feature a single-storey basement with contiguous piling. The new building will be marked for its sustainable features as well as its design which will enable it to become a landmark building. The development will create an inspirational environment.
Osborne was initially awarded contract for proving construction advice for supporting the design of the development, enabling works as well as archaeological investigation. Construction of the new building is due to be completed in early 2014.
