The project, which involved the redesign and refurbishment of the pools, changing room building and cafe at the Hurlingham Club in west London was given the top award at a ceremony at the Carpenters’ Hall in the City of London on 27 November.
Chairman of the judges, Michael Morrison of Purcell UK described DMA‘s work on the project as ‘delightful’, saying: ‘The careful analysis of what was loved about the old changing room pavilion was sympathetic and the recreation and integration of all the elements which mattered were carefully considered and achieved with great craftsmanship.’
DMA won an invited competition in 2008 to design a state of the art facility. The resulting scheme comprises a 30m pool, a children’s pool, a changing room building and a cafe.
According to DMA ‘The new buildings draw on the rhythm, scale and materials of the original [buildings], including adopting the distinctive Club colours, while providing modern standards of accommodation and a facility for the members to enjoy for the next eighty years.’
