Amtrak, also known as the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, which provides intercity passenger train service in the US, has signed a lease with Hospitality Partners for construction and management of The Inn at Penn Station, a $9 million ‘boutique’ hotel inside the 1911 train station.

As per the Maryland Historical Trust endorsed plan, the hotel rooms will line the perimeter of the station and will be reached from corridors overlooking the main concourse below. Jim Glennon, president of the development division for Hospitality Partners, was reported stating that the hotel would be built in compliance with federal standards for historic preservation. He adds that the room rates would me ‘mid-scale’.

The hotel, a part of the $100 million vision plan of the city, is part of the expansion to include a hotel and shopping arcade on Amtrak’s property north of the train tracks, with a link across the tracks to the station itself. The project will also include an underground garage for several hundred cars, a hotel and conference center, shops, a park and band shell for outdoor concerts.

Construction is expected to begin by the end of 2009 and is slated to reach completion by the end of 2010.
