The design of the newly renovated HUB embodies forward-thinking, contemporary facility for modern day students. The designer has used both the original elements of the building, and repurposed those with new features to create a modern space.
The project has preserved almost 50% of the building’s superstructure and expanded it to create a more spacious, connected, accessible and inviting building. The design of the renovated HUB tries to capture the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
The project was targeted for LEED Gold certification. To achieve this, Perkins+Will incorporated multitude of green elements. These initiatives comprise a series of atriums in the centre of the building, which in addition to being a new heart of the HUB, also bring in natural light and fresh air into the inner space. This saves on power consumption on artificial lighting and ventilation.
Further energy efficiency is achieved by means of upgrading the exterior wall of the building, which permits the use of daylighting and natural and mechanical systems, and reaps an energy saving of almost 25%.
The company has also developed a rain garden along the Stevens Way sidewalk, which feature native plants and is irrigated by runoff storm water, making the garden water-efficient and aesthetically pleasing. Additional green credentials of the building include use of sustainably sourced wood.
The designing and construction work spanned for five years.
