Work involves renovating the hotel’s guest bathrooms to conserve water. New low-flow shower heads and water-wise commodes will be installed to reduce bathroom water usage by half.

The bathroom tile floors are being overlaid with a thin tile made partly of recycled material while the hotel’s vintage teak trim has been preserved, as has the bathtubs. The cabinets were upgraded with Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood while the counter tops were re-fabricated from the existing marble.

Ankrom Moisan Associated Architects were responsible for the new green design of the bathrooms while non-profit ReBuilding Center of Portland sold off all the outgoing material, while any materials not sold will be reused.

The 150-room hotel has its first green upgrade three years ago with the renovation of its guest bedrooms and living areas along with the addition of a new heating and cooling systems. As a part of the green project the hotel also installed CFL light bulbs to conserve energy usage by 20 to 30%.

The hotel expects to achieve both Energy Star and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certifications.
