Built under the stewardship of woodsman Ben Law, (whose own oak house featured on Grand Designs), Swan House Farm near Hindhead in Surrey is set within 100 acres of ancient woodland. It will provide highly sustainable accommodation for three long-term Trust volunteers and is a timber structure built using locally sourced materials. Coppiced sweet chestnut was used extensively and was also used to provide hand cut and finished roof shingles. Klober Managing Director David Arendell commented, “Klober underlays have been used on a number of National Trust projects, most notably at Tyntesfield and Calke Abbey where they were also found to be compatible with several species of roosting bats. But whether for traditional or contemporary timber frame buildings, Permo forte continues to be a popular choice with designers”.
