Vancouver architect Matthew Soules was roped in to design a public urinal for the city. The recently revealed urinal is in the form of a pissoir inspired by public washroom facilities found in 19th century Paris.
Public washrooms around the globe were studied before designing this pissoir, which emerges as a free, open-air-but-private urinal designed for public use. Self-cleaning toilets were also tested before implementing this design.
The urinal comprises 150 vertical steel green pipes welded together in a curved design evoking the arches. These pipes are spaced to hide the user from public glare, while making it evident that the urinal is being used.
The urinal has also been equipped with handle bars for women to use. Low-flow technology and low voltage interior LED lighting has also been provided for use at night.
