The new hospital, initially, will be a 450-bed facility, which can be expanded to 738 beds by 2021. It will also offer potential for further expansion of up to 900 beds. The hospital will have a cancer centre and offer other complex surgical services, which comprise neuro, cardiothoracic, maxillofacial and specialised trauma services.
Construction on the project is expected to begin in October 2012 and is expected to create about 1,800 to 2,000 construction jobs. The Sunshine Coast University Hospital is expected to open in 2016 and is anticipated to create further 3,500 operational jobs.
SCUH is being developed as a part of 20 hectare Kawana Health Campus, which will also accommodate a Skills, Academic and Research Centre (SARC), a private hospital, and the Kawana Health Innovation Park.
