Taking the railway track from single to double track, the upgradation will provide greater capacity for freight and passenger trains. The line is part of the European TEN network and is essential for traffic between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe.

The upgradation work includes the electrification of the new track, upgradation of signalling systems at four stations, replacement and renewal of bridges.

Apart from that the upgradation project also includes expansion of rail embankments and replacement of soft bottom areas.

Following this upgrade, the entire stretch between Tinglev and Fredericia will be double-track. Planning is currently underway with the line due to be ready for operation in 2015.
