The stadium which entailed an outlay of NGN54 billion (0.34 billion) required an extensive renovation on the pitch that was infested with weeds. Post renovation, the stadium wears a new look without grasses and weeds.

The repair works began on 14 September, with a major part being carried out. The larger part of the repairs would be completed, once the project secures funding.

The stadium was designed to accommodate 60,000 spectators. Located on the outskirts of Abuja, this multi-purpose sports arena is considered as one of the greatest architectural landmarks in the city. The structure is supported by a cable network weighing 800 tons, which is lightweight in nature.

This curving membrane structure shelters the spectators as well as forms the key element of the architecture. The structure employed 31,000 square metre of PTFE-coated glass fibre membrane, providing protection against sunshine and extreme tropical downpours.
