Three Mthatha-based construction companies Tikanedywili Construction and Makole Business Enterprise, Lodumo/Alamo Project Joint Venture and Intellec Construction already started the trenovation work.
The project includes the building of a temporary relocation structure, terminal building upgrade, civil works and fencing. The renovation project has been undertaken in order to improve the capacity, use and management of the airport as a viable economic asset.
The airstrip has been upgraded by improving lighting for night flights. The South African Civil Aviation Authority has inspected the lighting and the province is now waiting for the issuance of a night rating for the airport.
The airport is expected to be linked with other larger cities, including Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban, post renovation.
The Mthatha Airport upgrade is one of the projects that have been earmarked to contribute positively to tourism in the region and during the 2010 FIFA World Cup event. The 2010 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place from June 11-July 11, 2010 in South Africa.
