Estimated to cost £1 million ($1.55 million), the refurbishment will convert the 1930s building into a centre for contemporary art and learning, which is named as The Tetley.

Designed as a contemporary visual arts centre for the city, the old building will be converted into gallery and learning/community spaces which will be located on ground, first and second floors. Apart from that the refurbishment also includes the upgradation of event, retail and cafe areas.

The redevelopment will also preserve heritage features such as the original boardroom and war memorials. Various period features would be renovated throughout the building, while a period glass roof and new exterior stairs and a lift would be added.

The scheme is managed by Project Space Leeds. Multinational professional services firm Arup has provided detailed plans for the site.

The refurbishment work started on site in September 2012 and is due for completion in September 2013.
