The new three-storey facility is part of a £100 million ($160.17 million) development at the University of Edinburgh’s Easter Bush campus which also involves construction of a new teaching building for the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies. It replaces the former home of The Roslin Institute. The building encompasses an area of 14,000 square metres. The facility’s design bears resemblance to a pair of chromosomes. Its offices are connected with research laboratories via a rainbow-like progression of differently coloured panels.
The building features open-plan working areas as well as break-out zones to facilitate interaction of scientists specialising in varied sectors. Other features incorporated in the facility include an auditorium as well as meeting amenities.
The project has been financed by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. The new building has already secured an award from Architecture Scotland and has been shortlisted for various other building and design awards.
