The project has been designed by the in-house team of the Glasgow City Council, led by architect Kerr Robertson. The new centre will be a learning, education suites and community facility, and will accommodate a 600-seater auditorium, advanced rehearsal spaces, recording and broadcast facilities, a learning centre, and office space.
The scheme also involves redevelopment of the north entrance for the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. The new centre will be connected to eastern part of the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Killermont Street.
The Glasgow City Council has roped in Arup, a UK-based construction services provider, for delivering the technical theatre systems for the full size orchestral rehearsal and recording hall for the orchestra. The auditorium will feature retractable seating, moving acoustic reflector surfaces, a variable sound absorption system and platform elevators to provide a flat floor or raised performance area.
The project is estimated to entail an outlay of £14 million ($22.6 million) and is scheduled for completion in 2015.
