Minnesota-based architecture and design firm LHB provided pre-design, architecture, engineering, interior design, and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) consulting services for the 44,400 square feet facility, which houses additional classrooms and student services on campus.
LEED sustainable design features are seamlessly integrated into the ‘S’ building.
Significant reduction of water use by 35%; optimised energy performance achieved by solar preheating of outside air during winter months; and exterior window shading, which reduces solar heat gain and controls glare are some of the ‘green’ features. Minimisation of site disturbance and the use of recycled and locally manufactured products on the project also helped the scheme to achieve the ‘green’ recognition. LHB coordinated the construction waste management process, resulting in over 1,000 cubic yards of on-site construction waste being diverted from the landfill.
The LEED rating system takes into account building performance in five areas: energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, materials selection, sustainable site development, and water savings.
