The design of the Saint Francis Chapel does not meet the conventional principles of the design of a chapel. The design conveys simplicity and openness, the reduction to elementariness and creates a dialogue between different cultures. The chapel is a small cubic room, creating a room of meditation which is open for everyone. It features open ceiling that is envisioned to guide the view beyond the everyday.

The building evokes connection with the cemetery by offering people the opportunity to light candles for their deceased. In addition, a new public space is created between the entrance of the cemetery and the chapel. It is being used by the local parish for several ceremonies during the year.

Structured (OSB board) black concrete material has been used for the whole building. Both walls and floors are made of concrete. Inside the chapel, the walls are separated in inches from 0.5 metres to two metres for placing candles.

Several institutions like Government of Upper Austria and University of Fine Arts Linz have promoted the project. The project started in June 2009 and was finished in August 2011.
