The rehab home is set to achieve LEED Platinum certification. The renovation has transformed the aged property into a model of affordable, sustainable urban living in less than 18 months.

Specific products were selected to help YouthBuild Philly achieve its energy efficiency, sustainability and affordability goals. A hybrid insulation system consisting of CertaSpray Closed Cell Foam and OPTIMA Blow-in Insulation System from CertainTeed was adopted. Foam insulation provides an effective seal on the backside of the home’s sheathing, while the fiberglass insulation fills the remainder of the cavity. It delivers an R-value that is almost equivalent to a passive house at a significant cost savings compared to a foam-only approach.

Saint-Gobain’s Grenite Engineered Stone Countertops has the highest post-consumer recycled content of almost 85%. Flintlastic GTA CoolStar’ Low Slope Roofing Cap Sheet and FlintBoard ISO’ Roofing Insulation from CertainTeed delivers cool roof energy-saving reflective roof surface technology.

Additional products used inside the Greene Street home to enhance the indoor environmental quality (IEQ), include Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound, environmentally-responsible damping material that, when used in conjunction with the Noiseproofing Sealant, dissipates up to 90% of noise and vibrations; and ProRoc Moisture and Mold Resistant Gypsum Board with M2Tech from CertainTeed, which is engineered to provide enhanced protection against mold growth while contributing to the home’s thermal and acoustical comfort.

To make the house attractive, CertainTeed has provided solutions that are both sustainable and aesthetic, including WeatherBoards Fiber Cement Siding, Octagons and Cedar No Groove Vertical Panel, which look and feel more like real wood. CertaWrap Weat Resistant Barrier has been used to add a layer of protection against air and moisture damage. Few CertainTeed products like Brookhaven Vinyl Fencing and Edgewood Vinyl Railing, Landmark Solaris Shingles in dusky clay have also been used to enhance the home’s aesthetics.

The YouthBuild Philadelphia project is the first to be finished under the three-year national partnership between the Saint-Gobain Corporation Foundation and YouthBuild US in support of the non-profit’s national green building and job training program.
