The GBP2 million ($3.35 million), 900 square meter citadel is a new worship hall and community facilitiy, dedicated to the organization. The Citadel Corps building features a contemporary design achieved through modern construction methods.

The new premises provides an assembly hall for worship and recreational facilities for a wide range of community activities such as, over 60’s clubs, youth activities, and toddler care.

The citadel also features an indoor sports hall, outdoor play area, lounge, kitchen, and foyer with reception café facilities, surrounding a 320 seater worship hall. The administration offices of the organization are located on the first floor.

The building is entirely composed of timber featuring a zinc roof. Cross-laminated timber panel from KLH of Austria are used to construct the building. These are environment-friendly, and feature characteristics of reinforced concrete construction with low construction costs.

The citadel is connected with the Chelmsford town center through an elevation on parkway, which features a 13 meter tall and three meter wide contemporary steeple clad in a radiant light film.

A butterfly zinc roof is used to connect the two elevations, and also encompasses the entire building. CNC router pattern-cut rockpanel boards were used to clad the east elevation. It features bespoke graphics based on the concept of the growing tree of life and features scriptural excerpts reflecting the ethics of the Salvation Army.
