The Annapolis Towne Centre at Parole is a new, two million square feet mixed-use development that includes retailers, restaurants and luxury condominiums. The center previously was the location of one of the largest dry cleaner chemical spills in Maryland’s history. The scope of Shaw’s responsibilities on the project included remediation of these chemicals from the soil and groundwater as part of the site’s redevelopment.
The award, given by the Phoenix Awards Institute, Inc., recognizes environmental and community revitalization projects from each of the 10 US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regions that are working to redevelop formerly used real estate properties. The project was selected as the award winner for the EPA Region III, which spans the mid-Atlantic states and includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
George Bevan, president of Shaw’s environmental and infrastructure group said that environmental remediation is a critical component of Brownfield redevelopment. He adds that without ensuring the safety of soil and groundwater elements, sites such as the Annapolis Towne Centre at Parole could not be revitalized into the positive spaces.
