Scottish practice Nord Architecture has designed the Shingle House as a part of Living Architecture’s invitation to established and emerging world-class architects to build houses around the UK, which will be made available to general public on rent.

The Shingle House is designed as a monumental black house, finished in tarred black shingles on the outside and in a beautiful palette of concrete and timber within. The house can accommodate eight people. The house covered in black tarred shingles is typical of the area, which is the most unusual and poetic landscape in England. The entire beach is classified as a nature reserve and is filled with unusual flora.

The houses will be available on rent for holidays for the general public. The initiative is designed to showcase how the quality of environment can impact life. The inspiration for the project came from a desire for people to be able to experience what it is like to live, eat and sleep in a space designed by an outstanding architectural practice.

Other villas under construction are ‘The Balancing Barn’ designed by Dutch practice MVRDV; ‘The Long House’ by British practice Hopkins Architects; ‘In-Between House’ by Norwegian practice Jarmund/Vigsnæs Architects; and ‘A Secular Retreat’ by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor.
