The expansion project is divided into two packages, and will be carried out simultaneously by local company Musyati Sdn Bhd. The first package encompasses extension of the passenger terminal building, central utilities building and associated works. The second package of expansion scheme constitutes airside and landside works, DCA building and associated work.

In June 2009, Sibu Airport was granted MYR150 million ($42.4 million) for renovating and upgrading its terminal building. The project is currently on with an expected completion by 2012.

The enhanced terminal will feature three aerobridges so that passengers need not walk for long distances to and from the aircraft. After the improvement, the terminal will be larger than Miri Airport and Bintulu Airport, both serving Sarawak city in Malaysia.

The contract period is 24 months and the procurement is through competitive tender. Kuala Lumpur International Airport serves as consultant for the project.
