Strabag Oman will undertake the phase-one civil works package of the airport project at a cost of OMR37.5 million ($97.6 million).

Sohar Airport will be constructed on an expansive site which is in close proximity to the major commercial, industrial and economic centers of Sohar.

The airport design will adhere to the IATA Class-A standards, as well as the recommendations and standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Development of the facility is planned in three distinct contract packages. Strabag Oman will undertake site preparation works and the construction of access roads, among other services.

With the four kilometer runway with turning loops at the ends, the airport will be equipped to accommodate and support aircraft as large as the Airbus A380 Superjumbo, which is the world’s biggest passenger aircraft.

The airport will receive a full length parallel taxiway with high speed access, along with a terminal building apron and cargo apron. The modern terminal buildings will be designed to hold around 500,000 passengers initially, as well as around 100,000 tons of air cargo annually.

Strabag will carry out mass grading works necessary to prepare the site for the construction of the runway, taxiway, runway exits, aprons and buildings. A staggering eight million cubic meters of earthwork will have to be undertaken to suitably level the undulating terrain that covers the project area.

The company will also build several kilometers of access roads, security fencing, electrical works and other utility infrastructure such as potable water network, irrigation network, fire fighting network and storm draining system, among other facilities.

The phase one construction is expected to be completed in 14 months.

The second package, currently under tender, involves the construction of airside facilities including the runway, taxiway, fuel and fire fighting systems and navigation aids.

The third phase will include the construction of passenger and cargo terminal, as well as associated buildings.
